My role(s): art direction, creative concepting, practical typography
As an ‘80s baby, I grew up alongside the music video. George Harrison and his taxidermied friends. Whitney Houston, rest her wayward soul, and her awesomely huge hair. And a certain red leather jacket and slick, zombified dance moves.
When approached to develop an idea for Lemon 5: King of Pop, Thriller sprang to mind. I wanted to evoke the fierce, edgy-yet-campy essence of the iconic original, but in a modern-day fashion shoot. Ola Ray reprised her legacy role — only this time, she played victim and hero in one.
Handcrafted clay lettering heralded the second coming of Thriller in a delightfully kitschy homage to the original video’s Claymation title.
Lemon 5: King of Pop earned D&AD honors for Design in 2013 and was featured in CommArts' 2013 Design Annual.
